✨Moving Diaries✨
Making the Moving Process Mindful, Intentional, and Calm
Objects at rest tend to stay at rest.
This is how I’ve found myself living in the same house for four years. I moved in right after college and have been here ever since. Staying put felt easier and less intimidating than starting over somewhere new.
But I finally had to come to terms with the reality that the benefits of finding a new place outweigh the costs of moving. So now, I find myself one week away from the moving process I’ve delayed all these years. I’m very excited and very nervous.
I’m determined to make this move as calm and mindful as possible. I know moving can be stressful, so I want to share my experience and help others navigate the moving process more peacefully.
Let’s start with a plan to stay organized and keep track of everything you need to do during your move.
Remember to do These Things Before Moving Out: A Checklist for a Smooth Moving Process:
💗Update Your Address
Submit a change of address with USPS, and update important accounts (bank account, driver’s license, subscriptions, etc.). Also, remember to give your new address to anyone who needs it, including friends and family members.
💗Update Your Renters’ Insurance
If you have renters’ insurance, make sure it lists your new address.
💗Update Your Utility Accounts
Running water and electricity are pretty nice to have! Don’t forget to close your current utility accounts and set up service at your new place.
💗Clean
If you’re moving out of a rental, do your best to clean and minimize any fees. Moving can be a little hectic, so just do what you can!
💗Declutter
Take this opportunity to declutter. I am using moving as a chance to sort through items that I’ve accumulated over the years. It’s hard, but I’m being intentional with what I bring into this new chapter.
In addition to organizing everything you need to do to prepare for your move, you can also plan a calm packing/cleaning strategy.
I recommend breaking it down into small steps to minimize stress.
Every week before the move:
✅Pack one section
✅Clean one section
For example, last weekend, I boxed up my candles and board games and cleaned the kitchen. The weekend before that, I boxed up clothes that I don’t wear as often and cleaned the bathroom.
Even if it takes longer, it feels more manageable!
